H2K3 Backpacking Trip
8/03
Lou led the group to an isolated lake in the wilderness. From left to right, Gerard (my son), Adam, Death-From-Afar (Brian), Jeff (Lou's son), Brita (my daughter), Red Flower (Danhua), and Lou.
Lou making camp.
The water was warm and the kids and I spent hours swimming in the lake.
There was an old trapper's cabin at the lake. Mr. Death-from-Afar prepares his fishing gear. He subsequently proved his full name was Mr. Trout Death-from-Afar.
I had to work hard to catch up with him. I got up at first dawn next morning to even the score.
Here's another shot, but the photographer messed this one up and didn't capture the true magnitude of my fish.
As I was fishing in the wee morning hours, I watched a dragonfly a few feet in front of me. I idly wondered if the trout would feed on the dragonflies, or the smaller flies that the dragonflies were eating. I thought I might examine the stomach contents of one of the trout to find out. Then, in front of my eyes, a trout jumped entirely out of the water and snatched the dragonfly. One instant he was enjoying the morning flight, and the next he was underwater in the jaws of a voracious carnivore. Rarely has God answered one of my questions so directly and immediately.

We didn't have any hot dogs to roast.
Red Flower and Indian Paintbrush.
Since we had to pack all of the gear up a mountain we were traveling
light. We only had a few knives with us. Red Flower's 2 knives
are not represented as she was not present for this shot.
A final shot on the way out. We stopped to pick a few blueberries as we left.
