I found this little cleaver at a second hand store for $1. It has a full tang and the steel is 3/32" in width. It appeared to have potential as a camp knife, but it lacked a point. I sketched in a profile on the blade that would remove some of the metal and result in a knife with a point. I decided to keep the original edge rather than try to regrind a new edge in a different shape.
A few minutes on the grinder was all it took to remove the extra metal. I kepa a pan of water by the grinder to cool the steel as I ground it.
This is the finished product. It takes a razor sharp edge. The steel is thick enough to pound through wood with a baton. The wide blade can be used to pick up foodstuffs, and the ofset from the handle serves both to prevent the hand from riding up on the blade, as well as allowing cutting materials without having the hand hit the cutting block.
